The Lindenhof site is part of the Ypres garden district of Torrepoort. This neighborhood has a coherent appearance with lots of public and private greenery, wide streets and compact buildings. The social housing company Ons Onderdak and Beschut Wonen Ieper wish to densify by replacing 5 houses with 5 one-bedroom apartments and 4 apartments for persons with psychosocial vulnerability.
We reflect on the different housing types from the perspective of the undeveloped space, the irregular shape of the plot, and its status as an inner area. The result is a compact building in which the public-private gradient is designed from inside to outside. At the centre is the green heart, the patio, which serves as a meeting place both at the scale of the building and the neighbourhood, as the public, yet informal, pathway structure runs through the building. Surrounding this, the service rooms are arranged in a ring. This configuration allows the residents to adjust their interaction with the neighbourhood or the collective according to their preferences. The living areas and bedrooms, in turn, are oriented towards the green surroundings, energising the environment.
The one-bedroom apartments are located on the ground floor and are interrupted in places by targeted passages that connect to the existing path structure and around which the main circulation of the building and bicycle storage facilities are also located.
Above, there are homes for individuals with psychosocial vulnerabilities, shared living spaces, a laundry room, and a south-facing rooftop terrace. This floor is designed around the gradients between collectivity and individuality, care needs and autonomy, dynamism and tranquility, and robustness and homeliness. Each resident follows their own, specific path and is given the opportunity, together with the support staff of Beschut Wonen Ieper, to either open up or close off, ask for help or be self-sufficient, and engage or relax.
