A retired farmer from Lievegem has dreamed all his life of a pigeon tower he can see from his couch.
Over the years, a number of old stables have fallen into decay and partially collapsed. We recover the still usable bricks and let them determine the design and its size. The remaining stones are crumbled into granules for the moulding, protruding from the plane (randière – keeps predators from entering the tower).
Below this frame is a wooden staircase that provides access through a floor hatch to the pigeons’ enclosed sleeping and nesting quarters. The space is illuminated at the top by 5 exit vents that can be operated from below.
The roof is trapezoidal and stepped. The grandstand becomes the stage and recalls the Casa Malaparte. Not Brigitte Bardot or Kate Moss, but Willy’s tumblers deserve fame and glory here.
